Adam Scott, Justin Thomas: Drama shots at Wyndham Championship, Day Two

PGA TOUR 2023, Wyndham Championship, Sedgefield CC, Greensboro, NC: 3-6 Aug

Adam Scott & Justin Thomas: Identical out-of-bounds shots cause drama on the course

In the second round of the 2023 Wyndham Championship, Adam Scott and Justin Thomas hit identical tee shots into the penalty area and struggle to figure out the drop location, a rules official and Shane Lowry come in to assist.  - PGA TOUR Video above

From Golf Monthly, by Ben Fleming:

Rules discussions are far from the most glamorous part of watching a professional golf tournament. Justin Thomas’ and Adam Scott’s nine-minute debate during the second round of the Wyndham Championship was a stern reminder in case you needed one.

Both players have plenty to play for, entering the week outside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings and on course to miss the end-of-season playoffs. But even with that on the line, their long, drawn-out rules discussion tested the patience of even the most ardent of golf fans.  Read more

From Australian Golf Digest, by Tod Leonard:

Not that they don’t take the rules seriously all of the time, but this wasn’t just any old ruling for Adam Scott and Justin Thomas on Friday in the Wyndham Championship.

Both men were battling to get inside the top 70 in points at the end of the week to advance to the FedEx Cup Playoffs. When they arrived at the eighth hole at Sedgefield Country Club in the second round, Scott was contending near the top of the board, while Thomas was right on the cutline of two-under.

Neither could afford a bad mistake, but both produced one when they hooked their tee shots into a creek near a stone bridge left of the fairway on the short par 4.  Read more

Hovland's ace gifts one student a four year college scholarship

Victor Hovland fires an ace at BMW Championship, gifts one student a college scholarship

"There is a hole-in-one challenge every year at the BMW that awards a lucky student with a four-year, $125,000 scholarship if a player makes an ace."  - Colby Powell, see below

From PGA TOUR:

In the final round of the 2022 BMW Championship, Viktor Hovland makes a 203-yard ace on the par-3 2nd hole.

Hovland's hole-in-one is the first of the 2022 FedExCup Playoffs and his second of the 2021-22 PGA TOUR season, after he made an ace at THE PLAYERS Championship. Hovland is the only player on the PGA TOUR with multiple holes-in-one this season.  [Video above]

From Yahoo!Sports, by Colby Powell:

Viktor Hovland may not have been in contention at this week’s BMW Championship, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t hit any meaningful shots on Sunday.

After holing out from a greenside bunker for birdie at the first, Hovland stepped up on the 206-yard par-3 second with a 6-iron in his hands. His tee shot took a couple hops before slamming into the flagstick and falling to the bottom of the cup for the first ace of this year’s FedExCup Playoffs...

A nice start to his day made someone else’s day, as the BMW Championship benefits the Evans Scholars Foundation, which provides college tuition and housing scholarships to hardworking young caddies with financial needs and a strong academic record.  Read more

From Yahoo!Sports, USA Today, by Riley Hamel:

What were you doing when you were 12? If we had to guess, we’d say you weren’t playing in a professional golf tournament.

Well, meet Louis Klein, a 12-year-old competing on the DP World Tour, formally known as the European Tour, this week at the D+D Real Czech Masters at Albatross Golf Resort in Prague, Czech Republic.

Klein posted an opening-round 4-over 76 on Thursday. He was even par through 17 holes before stumbling to a quadruple-bogey 8 at the par-4 18th. On Friday, Klein was 2 under through 12 holes before playing his final six at 4 over for a day-two 2-over 74.

Despite the tough finish, the young man walked in this long par putt at the par-3 third, his 12th of the day, during the second round and the fans loved it.  Read more

Mark Hubbard's Ace - after angrily turfing his club

Mark Hubbard's Ace at Rocket Mortgage - after throwing down his club

At this year's Rocket Mortgage Classic, Mark Hubbard turfs his club in disgust...

...only to find he had fired an ace!   [Video above]

From PGA TOUR, by Cameron Morfit:

DETROIT – Mark Hubbard had made a hole-in-one eight times heading into the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He knew what it felt like. Heck, his eighth ace came “after I had dropped about 100 beers” at Baker’s Bay in the Bahamas, so he thought he knew enough to cast quick judgement of his 216-yard tee shot at the 11th hole at Detroit Golf Club.

Disgusted with what felt like another right miss, Hubbard let go of the club with both hands on his follow-through, but when he looked up he saw that the ball had taken off neither too far right nor too far left. It was soaring directly at the pin.

“Dude, that better not go in,” said Wyndham Clark, one of his playing partners.

It did, of course, touching off a celebration that surprised no one more than Hubbard himself.

“I mean, honestly, it was pretty embarrassing,” he said after signing for a 4-under 68, four behind early leaders Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith. “Didn't quite know where the ball was going today. Taking a week off and whatever I just didn't feel as spot on and I think I let go of the club on about three of the last four shots as well and they all ended up OK. I just felt really stuck and I thought it was going to be way right of the green.  Read more

Viktor's clubs (& luggage) lost en route, again!

DP World Tour 2022, Genesis Scottish Open, The Renaissance Club, Scotland: 7-10 July

Genesis Scottish Open - Viktor's clubs (and luggage) lost en route, again!

Back in December-January, Viktor Hovland was heading to Kapalua to play in the Tournament of Champions when his golf clubs vanished en route. Eventually they did turn up, but his golf bag was damaged and his driver shaft was broken.  That misadventure was covered here.

Viktor's driver shaft had been broken before (yet that time he went on to win!) and now his travelling clubs have vanished again. This time his clothes and travel luggage disappeared along with his clubs, on their way to the Scottish Open.

From Golfweek, by Riley Hamel:

A few months prior to his trip to the TOC, Hovland’s driver was snapped by Danny Lee on the range at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. He was lucky enough to use one of James Hahn’s backups that week — and he went on to win.

So, attention bettors, you might want to put some units on Hovland this week as yet again he’s without his clubs at a PGA Tour event.

Ping is reportedly building him a backup set on property.  Read more

One in a million chip shot: Will Zalatoris at Scottish Open, Round One

DP World Tour 2022, Genesis Scottish Open, The Renaissance Club, Scotland: 7-10 July

The one in a million chip shot, by Will Zalatoris at the Scottish Open

Another clear shot of what happened, at this link

From Bro Bible, by Grayson Weir:

Will Zalatoris pulled off one of the most improbable chips that you will ever see on Thursday. Not because he sunk an incredible bunker shot to save par and not because he used the back slope to roll in an insane birdie.

Zalatoris’ chip was so remarkable not because of its consequences. Instead, it was truly something that you will probably never see again in golf. Like, ever.

With his fourth shot on the Par-5 16th at The Scottish Open, Zalatoris chipped from just off of the green. His shot rolled across the long, links green at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick and almost holed out.

However, the ball kissed the edge of the cup and did not go in. After rolling past the hole, it stopped perfectly on top of Matt Fitzpatrick’s poker chip-looking ball marker.

It didn’t hit it and bounce off. Zalatoris’ chip slowly rolled right on top of the marker and did not move.  Read more
