19 year old Chanettee Wannasae wins in Portland; only the third time ever on the LPGA Tour that a Monday qualifier has won

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Teenager Chanettee Wannasaen played a five-hole stretch in 6 under early in the final round Sunday and closed with a near-flawless 9-under 63 for a four-stroke victory at the Portland Classic to become the first Monday qualifier to win on the LPGA Tour since 2015...

Wannasaen arrived at Portland ranked 367th and having missed nine straight cuts in her rookie season. The 19-year-old from Thailand credited her caddie for keeping her calm and put together four stellar rounds in the 60s at Columbia Edgewater. She shattered the tournament scoring record by five strokes with a 26-under 262 total for her first LPGA Tour victory.   Read more

Sarah Kemp was the highest-finishing Australian, hitting four birdies and a bogey in a final-round 69 to leave her tied for 21st at 13 under.

Grace Kim (70) was a shot further back after an eventful first seven holes on Sunday, in which she hit two bogeys, two birdies and an eagle before finishing two under for the day.

Wannasaen arrived in Portland ranked 367th by the LPGA and having missed nine straight cuts in her rookie season.

The United States of America has won the 49th Walker Cup after defeating Great Britain and Ireland 14½-11½ at St Andrews.

The Americans rekindled memories of their last away win at Royal Liverpool in 2019 with another stunning second day singles display to reverse a three-point overnight deficit and secure victory at the Old Course. Mike McCoy’s team trailed 7½-4½ going into day two, but handled the windy conditions over the links superbly to triumph against Stuart Wilson’s GB&I side.  Read more

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- Gordon Sargent lived up to his billing as the No. 1 amateur in the world by winning all four of his matches at St. Andrews as the United States rallied to win the Walker Cup on Sunday for the fourth straight time.

Great Britain & Ireland had a three-point lead going into the final two sessions on the Old Course. The Americans won three of the four morning foursomes, and they poured it on during the 10 singles matches.  Read more

At Dromoland Castle: Van Dam's driver breaks; Soenderby wins after playoff; Aussie Rudgeley ends just one shot from the top

It was a spectacular final day for Smilla Tarning Soenderby as she secured a dramatic playoff victory at the 2023 KPMG Women’s Irish Open.

The Dane headed into the final day in a tie for 21^st place after rounds of 71-67-72 on the first three days at Dromoland Castle.

But Soenderby fired the round of her life – a 62 (-10) – to post the clubhouse lead and was later joined by Sweden’s Lisa Pettersson and Anne Van Dam of the Netherlands.

Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley ended the tournament in fourth place on 15-under-par after shooting a round of 67 (-5) on the final day.

The LET rookie made a hot start with five birdies on her front nine, she then went bogey-bogey on 12 and 13 but recovered with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to record her best-ever LET result.

Rudgeley said: “I’m proud of myself, it’s my first year. I’m happy I went back home as it sorted a few things out. It was a solid week, I didn’t do too much wrong. It was my first time in this situation as well and good to be able to push all the way to the end. I loved it and it was good to be in contention.”   Read more

Denmark's Smilla Soenderby won the Women's Irish Open as she eagled the first play-off hole following her sensational closing 10-under-par 62.

Soenderby, 23, was nine off the pace going into the final day but carded 11 birdies to finish on 16 under par.

Swede Ludvig Aberg is European Masters Champion 2023, at his second DP World Tour event

Ludvig Aberg claimed a maiden victory in only his second DP World Tour event as a professional courtesy of a stunning finish at the Omega European Masters.     

The former World Amateur Number One confirmed his status as one of golf's rising stars with a closing 64 at Crans-sur-Sierre to deny Matt Fitzpatrick a hat-trick of titles in the Swiss mountains.

Sweden's Aberg birdied four of his last five holes to finish on 19 under for the week, two ahead of compatriot Alexander Björk, with long-time leader Fitzpatrick eventually finishing in a tie for third with Scotland's Connor Syme.  Read more

Megan Khang's steady lead after three 66 rounds;  Jang's 11 birdies, 62 round

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Megan Khang closed with an 18-foot birdie putt for her third straight 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead Saturday in the Portland Classic in a bid to win for the second straight week.

The 25-year-old American was on top at Columbia Edgewater six days after winning the CPKC Women's Open at Shaughnessy in Vancouver, British Columbia, for her first LPGA Tour victory. Columbia Edgewater and Shaughnessy were both designed by A.V. Macan and feature towering trees.

"Game feels pretty solid," Khang said. "I think last week definitely helped build some confidence, knowing I can win out here. It's not just if it was going to happen or when, but like it has happened, so it's definitely a great feeling to have under the belt."  Read more

South Korea's Hyo Joon Jang shot a blistering 62 to move within one shot of leader Megan Khang after three rounds of the Portland Classic on Saturday in Portland, Ore.

Khang shot a third consecutive 66 to sit 18-under-par 198 in her bid for wins in consecutive weeks. Khang won her first career tourney at last week's CPKC Women's Open.

But it was the round of Jang that highlighted Saturday's action. She finished with 11 birdies, tying the LPGA record for the second most in a round.  Read more

GB&I lead at St Andrews after "A hard-fought day"

Great Britain and Ireland lead the United States of America 7½-4½ after day one of the 49th Walker Cup at St Andrews.

Stuart Wilson’s side are bidding to win the trophy back after three consecutive defeats in the biennial encounter and take a three-point lead into tomorrow’s second day at the home of golf.In glorious conditions in front of large crowds, John Gough and Calum Scott were the stand-out performers for GB&I after delivering two points each from the first day of play.

“It's obviously been a great day result-wise for GB&I, but it's been hard-fought day,” said Wilson. “I think that would be the message."  Read more

John Gough of England won both his matches Saturday at St. Andrews and Great Britain & Ireland built a three-point lead over the Americans in the Walker Cup for its largest opening day margin in 34 years.

GB&I has not won the Walker Cup since 2015 but earned a 7.5-4.5 lead over the United States at St Andrews, its largest lead since the same score in 1989 at Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta. 

Gough and Matthew McClean held on for a 1-up victory in foursomes as GB&I set the tone by taking three of the four team matches.  Read more

Matt Fitzpatrick seems very much at home in the Alps, leads by two into final round

England's Matt Fitzpatrick put himself on course for a hat-trick of Omega European Masters titles with a third-round 67.

The former U.S. Open Championship winner, who turned 29 on Friday, combined seven birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey on the 13th to move to 15 under par.

Fitzpatrick, who became the first player since Seve Ballesteros to defend a title at Crans-sur-Sierre with his victories in 2017 and 2018, is two clear of Swedes Ludvig Aberg and Alexander Björk and Scotland's Connor Syme.  Read more

Day Three: Anne Van Dam leads into final at Dromoland Castle, three shots ahead

Anne Van Dam fired another round of 66 (-6) at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open to hold a three-shot lead with one round remaining.

The Dutch star produced rounds of 69 (-3) and 66 (-6) on the first two days of competition to sit one shot behind 36-hole leader Diksha Dagar.

Van Dam got off to a good start with a birdie on the first and then rolled in another on the third before adding another on the ninth, she made another birdie on 11 before dropping her only shot of the day on the 13^th hole.

However, she bounced back and finished in style.  Read more

A bogey at the last from Leona Maguire leaves her eight shots adrift of the leader Anne van Dam heading into the final round of the KPMG Women's Irish Open at Dromoland Castle.

Six behind at the start of play, Maguire need a good start, and she picked up her first shot of the day on seven. More birdies followed on 11, 15 and 16, but on the par-five 18th, she needed four to get down from 100 yards and finished with a successive 69.  Read more

Anne van Dam took matters into her own hands in the third round of the KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Dromoland Castle where the 27-year-old Dutchwoman, a phenomenally long-hitter off the tee, with drives averaging close to 290 yards, shot a 66 for a 54-hole total of 15-under-par 201 to claim a three-strokes lead over closest pursuer Lisa Pettersson of Sweden.

Perrine Delacour stays ahead in Portland; Sarah Kemp & Grace Kim easily make the cut

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Perrine Delacour held onto the Portland Classic lead Friday with another bogey-free round at Columbia Edgewater, shooting a 5-under 67 in perfect conditions a day after opening with a 63 in the rain.

"You had to adjust for the pins, especially on the wedges," Delacour said. "But it was definitely nicer. I mean, even though the bag is still wet from yesterday, but it was definitely nicer to be in shorts and polos instead of rain gear."  Read more

Defending champion Andrea Lee (71) and two-time winner Brooke Henderson (68) were in the group at 7 under that includes leading Australian Sarah Kemp.

After opening with a 66, Kemp dropped down the field with a 71 and is tied 25th.

Grace Kim shot a 69 to make the 4-under cut by one and is two behind Kemp.  Read more

After a slow start in the afternoon wave, with just one birdie on the back nine at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Delacour reached 14 under by getting birdies to fall at Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 7. There’s a reason why many players who win, especially those who win for the first time, choose not to play the tournament the following week. Because it’s exhausting.

Megan Khang, who won for the first time on the LPGA Tour at last week’s CPKC Women’s Open, is playing once more this week at the Portland Classic.

And the newest winner in the women’s game is feeling quite tired.

Khang said she’s doing her best to take her time, pace herself, and not overly tax herself away from the golf course. The strategy has paid off through the first 36 holes.  Read more
